The Thinker | RACHEL VALDÉS

Commissioned by the Cigarral de Menores Foundation (Gregorio Marañón) in Toledo, this piece consists of a mirrored cubic structure that becomes a perceptual device, transforming space and revealing it from multiple dimensions.

Far from imposing its presence, the piece dissolves into its surroundings thanks to its reflective materiality, functioning as a membrane between inside and outside, between the self and the world.

The reflections are not merely aesthetic; they are the vehicle for a deeper investigation into the boundaries between objective and subjective reality, into the possibility that art can be a gateway to the intangible.

The sculpture thus becomes a “mental space,” a symbolic architecture that invites introspection and active presence. It is, in essence, a space that summons thought and contemplation. Hence its name:

The Thinker , a reference not only to intellectual activity, but also to the bodily and sensory experience of thinking in and from the place we inhabit.

The installation is part of the Cigarral de Menores Foundation, sharing space with artists such as Eduardo Chillida and Cristina Iglesias, among others.

The collection was created under the sensitive vision of Gregorio Marañón and Pili Martínez Campos, who have transformed the site into a haven for art, nature, and thought.

The addition of this piece reinforces the space’s role as a meeting point for culture, landscape, and inner reflection.

Rachel Valdés's " The Thinker" is a work that precisely and poetically recreates one of the artist's great obsessions: the dialogue between the individual, the object, and the landscape.
