Swimming Pools

Rachel Valdés's "Swimming Pools" series comprises 21 pieces that explore the abandonment of empty swimming pools in Havana, evoking the atmosphere of 1990s Cuba as veritable temples of introspection. Although the project germinated more than a decade ago, the artist developed it more intensely from 2020 onwards, culminating in her first solo exhibition in Madrid (Galería La Cometa, 2023).

The works stand out for their sophisticated technique, which blends watercolors on large-format cardboard—such as her emblematic Swimming Pool Triptych (2020)—with digital drawing, photography, and a rain sound installation that enhances the viewer's immersion. Through these uninhabited spaces, Valdés explores blue as a mystical hue and reflects on oblivion, solitude, and symbolic structures like the wall or the labyrinth.
